Let's say you have a bunch (35-36 if that makes any diff) of 10.5 x 10.5 color illos for a children's book to scan and you have nifty Epson scanner with a letter size scan bed. It'll take two scans and editing to end up with the 10.5" square image. It's been ages since I've had to figure out the cost per scan and probably at least a decade since I've had to scan something too large for the bed and reassemble it. I have absolutely no idea what a going rate might be, but must come up with something to tell someone who's asked me for a price.
Help, pretty please? |

Thanks for the pointer. I'd forgotten that thread. Hm...I don't know whether the client would think $30 (2 scans) + something for compositing for each of those 35-36 illos is reasonable...

Personally, I wouldn't do it that cheap. I charge $15 for b&w scans, but more for color, since it usually requires some Photoshopping.
What I would do is find a service bureau or imaging house that does oversize scans and get a price from them. Then figure how long it would take to scan the illustrations in two pieces, join and edit them, and come up with a final cost per image based on your hourly rate. Balance that against having them done at a service bureau. If you can't find a local place that does oversize scans, I'm sure you can find a vendor online. I don't know offhand if my local service bureau does them, but can check next week if you want. Another option would be to buy an oversize scanner. <g> mxh |
