Default CSS to center an image and constrain long captions

We already have classes that left or right align images, automatically wrap long captions, and lets the text flow around the image/caption. We'd like something similar for centered images, but the left/right styles use position: absolute, so we need a new approach.

We can't use HTML5 yet. So, with XHTML 1 Transitional, is there a way to use CSS to center an image, constrain long captions to the width of the image without setting a width manually, and left align the text under the image?
