Default PDF Pen 3.0 (Mac)

The Macintosh-only utility PDF Pen 3.0 from Smile On My Mac is a tool for editing and modifying PDF files without using Acrobat. Its key features (from a press release):
  • Replace text in original PDF with editable text blocks
  • Move, resize, copy and delete images in original PDF
  • Copy and paste rich text; retain fonts and formatting when copying from PDFs
  • Select and copy text across multiple columns
  • Overlay text and images onto PDF (for example, sign purchase orders by applying signature image)
  • Show PDFs in single, facing-page, multi-page, and multiple facing-page views
  • Insert and remove pages; re-order pages in a PDF by drag-and-drop
  • Fill out and save PDF forms
  • Scribble your signature or anything else directly onto a PDF document
  • Use with PageSender for a complete fax turn-around solution
  • Automate PDF manipulations with AppleScript
I have no experience with PDF Pen, but it sounds useful. Version 2 received 4 (of 5) mice in a 2005 MacWorld review.

The software lists for $50. From now through January 14, 2008 Smith Micro/Digital River is offering it at a special price of $30. It sounds like a closeout, but if the software works, you might find this a good deal, and there is a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Smile On My Mac also sells a Pro version for $95. That facilitates working with PDF forms. You can read about that at the company’s site.
