Default Font advice requested

I have a problem with a book I am publishing for this Fall -- the manuscript, after major edits, is still quite a bit longer than expected/costed for. I'm trying to find a typeface that will set a little shorter and maybe save us a signature.

Because it's a children's book, and in a series, we can't just drop the size or leading by a point or two. It has to look unintimidating and readable.

Anyone have a go-to font they use when text is running long? The editor is currently using Garamond 11/15, if I recall correctly.
