Default Presto (R) Email Service

I heard an ad on the radio about the Presto email service, and now I have been checking it out, with help from Google.

A detailed Presto Review

is a good starting place, if you want the whole story, including photos of the HP Printer, prices, results, etc. The essence is that this is a HP color printer that connects to a regular phone line. The printer calls the Presto service on its own, and then prints any email, including photos, waiting to be received. Someone else with a computer must manage a "white list" of acceptable senders, who send their emails to some xxx@presto.com email address, thus defeating SPAM. The idea seems to be that Granny will get the printer, and her tech savy children or other relatives will pay for and manage the white list for her, and presumably set up the printer, too.

The printer costs $149, the service costs $10 a month or $99 a year, and the printer color cartridge costs $35. (All prices rounded.) Not cheap, but I can see how HP will make its money, as always, on the cartridges, and Presto will make its money on the forwarding service.

This is a clever idea, and bound to sell well, but we will see whether there are glitches not forseen. One comment was about how a fax machine could do something similar, but the print quality and SPAM associated with fax machines is a strong argument against that idea.
