Yeah, that's what I came to realise. However, I re-suggested we try it my way - to set up a new document just for the pages concerned, with the real pages sized at 8.25 x 10.25, then fill the pages right up to all edges, print the PDF and merge it with the rest of the book (in any case, I work on 10-12 page chunks at a time, simply because I'm doing all this on a laptop with 0.5 Gb RAM, which wouldn't cope with the image-heavy book all at once, so it's no big deal to create a separate doc just for those pages. A decent desktop machine is in the pipeline, but this is real publishing-on-a-shoestring stuff

). The printer agreed to give it a try - so I sent off a 4-page test file comprising those two pages and the preceeding and following pages, and to my relief it worked.
I've been patting myself on the back... ...but I'd love to find out what the printer meant. So much to learn, so little time.
