It looks Vivaldi email client is out of beta. Also, feed reader. And calendar. All integrated into the browser. I'm not up to testing this. Sooooo...

I'm not a fan of trying to cram everything into one program. I'm more than happy using a browser to browse, and an e-mail client to e-mail.

THe problem with every "does it all" tool I have ever encountered is that they never work as well for any of the tasks they perform as tools that were designed for the specific task.

Interesting...I've never knew they offered a mail option...I have a (very) vague memory of trying Vivaldi but not liking it for reasons I no longer remember...I should check it out again...

The email bit is something that used to be available in Opera - something that at the time worked very well.

Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner was co-founder of both Opera and Vivaldi, hence there might some common thinking behind the two.

As for using different applications for browsing and emailing, I'm all for using what works best. Currently that's Vivaldi and Thunderbird on my laptop, and Vivaldi and Edison on my phone. But that's me.

I also go for what works best for me and I try not to presume that what works for me, would work for anyone else...'-}}


A few months ago, I discovered that there are portable versions of Thunderbird and since I've fallen in love with using portables for Firefox and Pale Moon (my browsers of choice and also my choice to use older versions of Firefox because mozilla keeps mucking up Firefox), I went looking for my version of TBird (3.1.15) in portable form and found it at uptodown.com --Windows-based TBird portable link and this is an excellent site of not only current versions but also older versions of software both portable and non-portable and I've never had any issues with virii/malware/crapware in anything I've downloaded from them.


I always do custom software installs to a separate software partition on my system (desktop) and I'd set up my original TBird with a custom mail folder on the same partition--so much easier to backup than the crappy Windows "Users" folders! I decided to keep that custom mail folder when I installed the TBird portable. This has come in handy because while I've recognize that my TBird version is very old, it still works just fine but for a number of reasons I installed a more current version of TBird portable (38.7.2) which is the first TBird version to work with the OAuth crap--I wanted to see how it worked. I set up the new TBird to also use my custom mail folder so I can open either TBird portable 3.1.15 or TBird portable 38.7.2 and all my mail is in both since they are both accessing the same custom mail folder.


I haven't had a chance to take a closer look at Vivaldi. The fact that it appears to use Chrome as a base is not attractive to me primarily because it's my understanding (which may indeed be incorrect) that I won't be able to control updates--NOTHING!!! updates on my system unless I allow it so autoupdating is an anathema to me.



Does Vivaldi (browser) all full user control of updates?

I use Waterfox Classic as my browser of choice since Firefox went nutso awhile back. It does well 95% of the time but, every once in awhile, I encounter a web site that demands a Chrome-based browser, and for that I reluctantly fire up Firefox.

But Waterfox is 64-bit only, so I can't run that on the tablet. I have Pale Moon on that, but I'm not at all happy with it. It doesn't run any of my Waterfox add-ons, and the ad-blocker that comes with Pale Moon doesn't work. I use the tablet very infrequently and, even so, every time I open Pale Moon I get frustrated. I will probably end up removing it and installing Firefox.

Did you try using a different User Agent? If you remember the url, I'd be happy to do some testing for you. Some sites don't seem to see the UA setting or the site has been deliberately coded to ignore the UA but a good majority of the time setting a UA gets around crap website design...

Which version of Pale Moon are you running?

A UA addon will allow you to spoof what browser you are using so that a website instead of seeing whatever Firefox version you are using, will see, say...chrome or edge or safari--by version--based on whichever UA you have chosen .

This is the one I use in Firefox 73 (portable) User Agent Editor which would likely work in whatever FF version you have installed (presuming that you use a relatively current version of FF). There are other UA addons you can choose by doing a search on "user agent" (no quotes) at addons.mozilla.org for Firefox.

You definitely want to move on to Pale Moon 31--I believe the most current is 31.1.1.

I don't know...I'm still using AdBlock Latitude which works effectively for me because I also use the Request Policy addon which allows me to see and control any/all website/webpage crosslinks--some website/webpages will have as many as 60-70 crosslinks of which 99% are tracking and ad crap and I don't allow them. I also use uMatrix addon which is similar to Request Policy and still works in the newer versions of Firefox--Request Policy is the old-style addon that mozilla banished but still works in Pale Moon. Because of how Request Policy or uMatrix works, by not allowing certain crosslinks, no ads display from those cross-links which is a nice plus. There is a learning curve with either RP or uM but I've found it worth the effort and have a VERY hard time even thinking about going online without one of them in my browser(s)--gives me the willies...'-}}


I'll see if I can get AdBlock to work on my Pale Moon 31 portable and report back...



Ok...I'm back...

I tried a number of different versions of AdBlock and none of them were accepted by Pale Moon 31. I had hopes that the Classic Add-ons Archive might have a usable vesions but that didn't work either--if you are unfamiliar see the caa-archive notes. Which version of Adblock Latitude are you using? I hadn't checked the version I've been using for a long time and just did that and the current version is 5.0.9...
