Default transparent background for Photoshop type to Quark

I am trying to create type in both Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10 with special effects, such as strokes, drop shadows or bevels. I would like to bring this type into Quark 4.1 with a transparent background, in order to lay it over a photo. How can I preserve the transparency....I have been saving the files as eps, but when it comes in to Quark, the background is white.
