PDF Font onscreen problems from InDesign file.

Can you attach a screen shot of part of your page including the “crummy-looking” type? Or the distilled PDF?

Sure....

the top text is EXPORTED using the settings I mentioned earlier. text is yuck...however I have the full page bleed as I should.

the bottom text is PRINTED through Distiller. Looks great - however I have a border on my page I can't seem to get rid of.

P.S. the font is Adobe Garamond Pro (but it seems to do this no matter what font I use.)

When printing through distiller, make sure you have a "paper size" (on the "Setup" tab of the print dialog box) large enough to accommodate the bleed AND on the "Marks and Bleed" tab make sure you have you have bleed amounts set all the boxes (uncheck the "Use Document Bleed Settings" if necessary).

Having "zero" set in those four boxes will clip any layout elements at the edge of the page, creating the border you are seeing.

There still seems to be some transparency issue in your file even with the type moved to a top layer. The transparency settings and issues when distilling are different than when using "export"... usually "export" is preferred as transparency can be kept "live" (unflattened) in the PDF whereas flattening always occurs when PostScript code is generated (as is the case when distilling).

To troubleshoot the problem with export, try choosing a different "Compatibility" option on the "General" tab of the export dialog. A "higher" Acrobat version will keep compatibility "live" in the PDF and in theory should prevent the problem, but if it is still occurring, try exporting with "Acrobat 4" compatibility, and then on the "Advanced" tab, choose the "High Resolution" preset in the "Transparency Flattener" setting.

oh thank you - unchecking the document bleed settings box and putting in .25 in the boxes fixed the white border.

well - i tried it both ways....chanign the compatibility to 7 as well as 4 and still had the same results as the picture I posted in a previous post.

Ok. I have the printing with distiller working alright. (not my preferred option - but still no luck with the export feature.) Now....

I need to get them to them web with thumbnail previews linking to a full size page. I have been using Photoshop > automate>Web Photo gallery. This would work perfectly - except the fonts become almost unreadable again.

Am I just going about this the wrong way? Is there a method out there that works that someone knows about? Essentially I need to get the InDesign files onto our website for viewing - I need to show thumbnails and have a thumbnail link to the full size page. I need to be able to do this quickly - not manually making thumbnails and creating webpages for each magazine page.
