Fingers crossed for you here too.

I've had to resort to HP's universal PCL driver in the last couple versions of Windows. Though to be honest, it'd be more accurate to call it the Lowest Common Denominator PCL driver. Not what you'd call "feature rich".

If it can squeeze a few more years of useful life out of what was a very good printer, that's all I need.

Same here, especially since my neighbor bought a new printer and asked if I wanted his old one: happily, the same model as the one I already have but with ethernet connectivity. And so far, the generic driver's been sub-optimal but adequate.

How does the universal driver install? Does it need to know what printer is going to be connected to it?

The universal PCL5 driver I have is from H-P, but I need it to run a Sharp printer (which also operates under PCL5). I'm hoping I can make that work.

My case is a bit odd; it needs to be able to find a printer on the network or be pointed at the right IP address, but I don't think it especially cares whether it's a specific printer or not. Then again, I haven't pointed it at a non-HP printer, so .....
