Default What year PageMaker became Adobe?

Hi,

I know that someone here will know... trying to establish my early DTP timeline for my students in Graphic Design history...

For my lecture tomorrow... (Tuesday morning)
What year did Aldus PageMaker become Adobe PageMaker?

I assume there is a DTP timeline somewhere out "there" on the web, anyone know of one they'd recommend? (Because, my textbook is chock full 'o' errors, I'd like a recommendation of something accurately spelled and dated!)

thanks

k

A quick Google search reveals <http://www.safran-arts.com/42day/history/h4mar/h4mar15.html#adobe>

March 15, 1994. $525 million.

Thanks. I would have thought it was much earlier.

I'll search also for the Altsys to Aldus, then to Macromedia FreeHand changeovers...

I recall a bus trip from Vancouver to Seattle to visit Aldus when I worked for Computer Solutions... Would have been about 1991 or 92.

Altsys never became aldus. Aldus had an arrangement to package and market Freehand, which was always an Altsys-owned product.

When Adobe purchased Aldus, Altsys (quite naturally) felt there was a conflict with Adobe assuming the marketing contract. It went to either federal court or the SEC (can't remember).

In the end, Macromedia bought Freehand.

I know Altsys (the company) never became Aldus, but FreeHand went over to them. I had forgotten it was just a marketing thing and not an ownership thing.... Follow the bouncing FreeHand...

Muchas Gracias! Close enough!

My presentation has turned out great! I even have added in some Rich Tennant 5th Wave cartoons to accent some of the content.

One of my faves is the Bud & Elliott Grunt invent the Mainframe Mouse...

I also added a favorite Mac error message as my last slide (I think most appropriate for the end of my class for the quarter).

thanx

That is wild! How come I never got that error message? I am so jealous of you! <g>

Aldus and Adobe announced their merger in early 1994. The actual merger happened in September 1994.

I'm not sure when the name and packaging actually changed. PageMaker 5.0 for PowerMac came out in May 2004 (still Aldus). PageMaker 6.0 for Mac came out in August 95 and for Windows in Nov 1995. So that is probably when the name changed from Aldus to Adobe.

I know this is late, and see you have got the information you needed; and this is not available on the web, but Pam Pfiffner’s book Inside the Publishing Revolution: the Adobe story has all the timelines (and narrative detail) you could ever ask for.
