Default Forum maintenance 20 Jan 09

Our server is to be upgraded today — Tuesday, January 20, 2009 — beginning at 9 p.m. GMT and continuing through 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

If things go well, we will actually be down for only a few minutes to an hour at some point during that 12-hour span.

If you try to enter and discover the forum is unavailable, please check back later. Sorry for any inconvenience.

If something goes wrong, you can send an e-mail to me at an address on a different server. Ever the optimist, though, I expect there will be no problems.

Ann had terrific problems, down about 5 hours.

We have plenty of surplus disk space, so do not expect many problems.

We were down for a while around 8:15 p.m. EST, back up by 8:45.

There seem to be no problems. Hoorah!

I couldn't get in at about 5.30pm 21st Sydney time, but maybe it was unrelated. I had to go out soon afterwards ( cocktail party followed by dinner) so didn't check back until now.

Who knows?

All in all, seems to have been a non-event. It probably helped that it was the day of Barack Obama’s inauguration — which grabbed the attention of many Americans. At least here in the northeast, there was nothing else on radio or television, and it was rather spectacular. (I cannot remember paying any attention at all to an inauguration in the past.)

I don't believe I've ever watched another inauguration live on television.

Me neither. As you say, it was pretty spectacular.

And it looks as if his first day in power was pretty busy, too...

Including a *second* swearing-in for Obama.

When we watched it, I was convinced that the judge had muffed the line, Obama got it right from memory, realized that it didn't match up, so he stopped and gave the judge another chance to get it right. Everyone else thought I was nuts, that Obama had stumbled.

So this morning we heard on the news that that's exactly what happened, and that they'd had another swearing-in ceremony. Just in case.

Ahhhhhh. Vindication. So sweet.

I think Obama got things going by beginning to say “I Barack Obama do solemnly swear” all in one breath. He was supposed to wait for the prompt for the second phrase. Then Roberts got rattled and misplaced the “faithfully,” Obama, oddly, chose to repeat it that way.

But who could be surprised that those two didn’t mesh very well. Obama had not only voted against Roberts’s appointment but spoke against him in the proceedings.
