Default Rant: Mac Fonts on a PC

I am a prepress manager, and here is a scenario that occurs all too often. Here is what happened today.

Company R sent me an ad file on CD. They sent a PDF/X-1a, along with an .eps file and associated fonts. When I opened their PDF in Acrobat 7 Professional, I learned that one of the fonts was not embedded, so the PDF/X-1a file would not output correctly.

No problem, the client said, because we also supplied an .eps file and all of the fonts.

Well, no, they didn't. Because the agency that created the ad works on the Mac platform, and the client works on PCs. The designer at the agency dutifully sent an EPS file, and all related fonts, to the client.

Great. But as soon as those Macintosh fonts got copied to a PC, they became so much spaghetti. When Mac fonts get copied to a Win machine, they lose their resource forks, and are useless.

We are talking about Type 1 postscript fonts, which are still prevalent. TrueType and OpenType transfer seamlessly, as far as I can tell.

IMHO, if you are providing "print ready" digital files, PDF-X/1a is the best format. But make sure to embed ALL fonts. If a font cannot be embedded due to licensing restrictions, convert it to outlines in your native application before going to PDF.

Please take my word for it. I work with this stuff all day long every day. I am the person you send your files to.
