Default Natural Color Schemes

There is a theory that any photograph of a natural setting will always contain a color scheme that works. And I know of one program (Gliftex) that uses this method to generate some of its patterns.

Several years ago I found a way to use Photoshop to generate color schemes from nature photos, and even some other types of photos. But now I don't have the energy to create samples to show this. So I'll just describe it in case someone wants to give it a shot.

1. Select photos of flowers, scenes of nature, or other subjects that you find pleasing.

2. Open in Photoshop.

3. Select Filter|Pixelate|Mosaic. Increase the cell size until you have a set of colors that you find attractive. Observe that as you increase the cell size the colors will average together more and become more muted. So just move the slider up and down to get a feel for what you prefer.

4. If this method doesn't suit you, try Filter|Texture|Stained Glass. Then adjust the Cell Size. This tends to brighten the colors, but they might be useful.

If you don't have Photoshop, look at what you do have. Your bitmap application probably has filters you can use instead. The main idea here is to be able to be able to preview color sets from photos.
