Thanks, Terrie. I was finally able to read/skim all of these. And it looks like my peeve is just the way it is.

Windows 10 allows me to pick an accent color. I can use this color three ways.

1. Title bars

2. Start menu, task bar, action center.

3. All of the above.

The problem is a good title bar accent color does does not necessarily make a good start menu background color. So all of the above doesn't work. So I'm only using it on the title bars, and this leaves me with a black start menu, task bar, and action center. And the only way to soften this was to turn on transparency, which has its own problems. But for now, that's what I'm doing.

I don't know why these colors affect me so much, but they do.

You are not alone in this. I am very particular about the colors on my system which is why I used to spend so much time tweaking the Appearance settings--until I realized that one can copy the saved .theme file(s) which contain all the tweaked settings from one system to another. The loss of the Appearance options in Windows 8 is one of the major reasons I didn't move to Windows 8 and the same lack in Windows 10 (along with lack of user control over updates) doesn't make Win10 attractive to me at all.

I don't know if someone created a utility that would mimic the old Appearance settings--sort of like Classic Shell--but I'll browse around and see if I can find one for you...

Here''s a color control program, but as I read the comments it seems it does not retain the color setting, and that's how it's designed. Then they discuss other things, and something about it crashing after a Windows update.

I think I'll stick with what I've got and see how it works out.

I just took a look. In Windows 10 Pro I can delay "quality" updates for up to 30 days. I can delay feature updates for up to a year. But in the end, resistance is futile and you will be assimilated.

UGH!!! '-}}

From what I have read, O&O's Shutup10 is the only thing out there that can really stop Win10 updates--the latest Microsoft assault bypassed the Windows Update Service that had been set to "disabled" according to a number of (very pissed off) dslreport.com users...
