Default Prices go up July 1 for .com and .net

VeriSign, which controls registration for .com and .net domains, is raising base prices by 7% and 10%, respectively, on July 1.

If you have renewals pending, you might want to renew before that date to save a few bucks.

It may not make good sense to register or renew for a long span, however. According to the e-marketing blog Mark8t, the contract granting VeriSign’s monopoly in these two domain name categories expires in 2012. There is also a pending antitrust lawsuit that could have an effect on prices.

More information about VeriSign’s rating status at Morningstar Credit Committee if you’re interested in the nitty-gritty.
