Ann:
'Or it thinks the British write words like "realize" ' What are you saying here? That 'realize' isn't spelled that way by genuine Britons? It's spelled that way by the OED and all OUP dictionaries (the OED has a long article explaining their error to people that think 'realise' is the proper way to spell that word and other verbs derived from nouns), me, and many others. It is true that The Times changed its spelling from the correct -ize form to the incorrect -ise form some years ago, but that may not be unconnected with its present owner's nationality at birth. But I digress. If she's using Windows (which asks the preferred language) and Word (which asks the same thing), she should get an Australian dictionary—which of course may give 'American' spellings for some words, such as 'labor'. It does depend to some extent on the versions of course, but there have always been American and English versions of Word dictionaries, which, as you know, are bought from some other company or even companies. Of course, many people don't bother to change the defaults—but surely not your sister. __________________ Michael |
