Default My Windows 10 got trashed but there was a fix

I did a routine restart of my computer because it had been on for more than a day. I left the room while it restarted and when I came back my desktop looked completely different. Different wallpaper. Most folders and shortcuts gone. And a message that said "we can't sign in to your account." It told me to try to sign in or my data could be lost. I was suspicious, so I rebooted. But nothing changed. So I tried signing into my account and it seemed to be working. But nothing changed. Restarted again. Same thing. Also, my calendar program didn't work, and other software started up as if they had never been started before.

Okay, enough explaining. Using my emergency computer, I found this a Microsoft page that covers this. The first thing on the list was to restart multiple times. So I decided to try three more times. The first time fixed it and I didn't have to move to the next thing to try.

Anyway, I post this just in case you run into this message. And FWIW, before this got fixed I had looked at the users folder on the hard disk and there was a new one called "temp." And I think some users were gone, but not my account. But now that my computer is working right, the "temp" folder is gone. Maybe Windows botched an update but was able to recover. Or maybe a virus was working its way in. My hunch is it was Windows causing the problem.
