steve: I don't think I've ever run into problems that can be traced back to ownership issues, though.

I've not had it happen with any great frequency but it has happened enough that I went looking for a solution. Very often just rebooting will usually let go of a file but sometimes even that doesn't fix the problem and that's when TakeOwnership comes in quite handy--when I've used it, I've been trying to delete a (generally user-originated or non-O/S) file/folder and been blocked by the system.
