Looks like the 2K Typographic Design website has greatly expanded since I first posted about it. Before they looked like they were trying to present a sedate image, and now they are coming on like sales-savvy capitalists.

But anyway, they imply that it's mostly about x-height, but there are other fonts where x-height is ample. With this ComfortPrint they came up with a good combination of dominant x-height, ample font weight, and narrow (but not too narrow) font width,
