judy: If it were my printer, I'd stick with the USB2 rather than spend so much for a repair. I doubt you'd see enough difference to justify the cost.
It was more a case of realizing how fragile these ports are and now wanting to make sure that I had a backup...I doubt I'll have the mainboard replaced...

That's good to know...I would have had to buy a new USB cable in any case--2 actually--because I needed at least 10ft and my other USB cables were too short...
