Default PDF Editors

I generally create many complex text documents in WordPerfect 8, then convert them to PDFs for distribution. In certain cases, the original WPD file cannot be faithfully converted to MS Word DOC, nor does an import of the WPD file into MS Word yield accurate renditions. Nevertheless, some of those complex text documents need to be further edited by recipients who don't have WordPerfect available to them.

How useful are PDF Editors? Do they really work?

What are sources for freeware PDF Editors and are any particularly recommended?
