Deep thread (not throat) cannot get to new messages

is now so deep that I have not found any way to get to the level of the newly added messages that seem to have been added since it shows up in New Posts only display.

I've tried manually navigating down the thread to the level they might be at but I run out of screen (width?).

Any way of dealing with this since we don't seem to have a keyboard shortcut for go to most recent message.

"Last Post" in the column head doesn't take me to any unread messages.

Am I missing something? Do others experience this?

I'm able (Mac, Safari) to get to the end, but as you say the thread tree goes so far to the right that it takes two clicks on "more replies below this level" plus a lot of scrolling to the right to find the latest message. Considering that the conversation has drifted so far away from the original topic, it's probably time to start a new thread in a different section.

I've been thinking that I should split that thread and hadn't gotten around to doing it. Will do it now in hopes that it will help you.


Later Edit: Ok...I've split the original thread putting the pc building posts into its own thread "Building your own PC" in the Harware & Gadgets section. The new thread is two pages but I hope you will be able to navigate it more easily. Let me know if not.

I use Quick Links > Today's Posts to show new posts and there is a "down arrow" icon to the left of the thread title which, if clicked will take you to the first new post (since you last accessed the thread)--my Display Mode is "Linear" not sure if that makes a difference...

I normally use the New Posts under Quick Links rather than Today's since I sometimes skip a day or more. New Posts takes one to several folders displayed at once and the newest arrow you mention does not show there.

Interesting - I always use New Posts and can always use the sideways (pointing right) arrow next to the most recent poster's name to get to the latest in the thread. That said, I did not try the thread in question before Terrie split it. But it's never failed for me!

Just tried New Posts and it displayed the same list that I get with Quick Links > Today's Posts in that the down-arrow icon is displayed to the left of the thread title--I wonder if the down arrow-icon is a function of Linear display mode?

Ok...switched to Threaded display mode and New Posts shows the down-arrow icon to the left of the thread title and clicking on it takes you to the first new post. I don't generally use the right-pointing-arrow icon to the right of the userid in the Last Post column but I just tried it and it takes me to the post by the user listed in Last Post.

Oh, my brain was getting muddled up between all "new" posts and the single "newest" (or latest) post. The right-pointing arrow is always there; the down arrow (with good reason) is not. If, by chance you have already glanced at a thread, the down-arrow disappears and it can be very difficult in a long thread to find your way back to all of the new posts, at least in Hybrid mode. You can always use the right arrow to get to the latest post and scroll up that branch from there, but if there are many branches in the thread you're out of luck spotting new posts in the other branches without looking at the dates. Does that make any sense? I rather think I'm babbling.

LOL!! Yes, it does make sense. I've always used Linear mode because I found the others modes confusing and difficult to follow. With Linear, every post is displayed all at once--well...with multiple pages if the thread is long. And even without the down arrow, it's easy to find the last post one's read because they are org'd by date/time and as I mentioned, visible. The one disadvantage of Linear is if people don't quote from the post they are reply to as sometimes I can't figure out who/what they are responding to--needless to say, I almost always quote at least a bit from the post I'm to which I'm replying.

I have always used Threaded Mode.

Part of the problem I get on deep threads may in fact be due to not using full screen view on my 23in Wide Screen LCD since the line length is too long for comfortable reading and to normally using Zoom at 145% for comfortable legibility at my viewing distance with the keyboard on the tray of a computer cart.

I think I may have checked at 100% zoom and found that I saw deeper but it still took a lot of scrolling.

To the best of my limited testing the "first new post" is not available once you are reading the thread which is usually the first I find the depth problem -- not before I go to the thread -- so if that can be changed it would be good?
