Default OT font names (clues)

I know that most of you here do not create fonts, but so many have run into missing fonts in menus, disappearing fonts, etc., that I thought you might want to read this article from FontLab on how to name OT fonts (second group on the page).

The comments after the article (scroll down) also explain some of the problems we have been hearing about.

Typophile also had a discussion of font-naming system in which Adam Twardoch from FontLab elucidated further.

Now why such a subject should need an article and further elucidation is one of those unanswerable questions, but it may help you unravel your font woes, and maybe even fix them. (Or give you ammunition to require the vendor to fix them for you, better yet.)
