Default Good resource on printing

The Printing Industry Exchange — which allows printers to buy and sell equipment, primarily — has a newsletter as well. The article that caught my eye — “When to Use a Spot Color” by Steve Waxman — discusses the use of mixed (i.e., Pantone) color vs CMYK mixtures and how to get a good print job at the right price. He advises something I learned the hard way — to select a printer with the most appropriate equipment for the job.

Unfortunately, he doesn’t provide much advice on how to do this (not in this article, anyway). First, as customers, we may not know exactly what equipment would be most appropriate. (Of course, we should have settled on the printer before finishing the job, but that isn’t always the case.) In the end it may mean going to someplace far away, which raises new issues.

Anyway, Printing & Design Tips Newsletter is a good resource. Worth poking around in if you need to have work printed commercially.
