Last night's Win 10 update
I got a message from Windows saying that pretty soon my version would no longer be supported, and that I must update. Sounded like a big update, and I had visions of Windows being dead after the update. So I tried to do a backup and my computer would not recognize the thumb drive. So I hooked up a different external but my backups software was not working right. After much fiddling, I got the backup done. I think what was happening is Windows had installed some protected files to be ready for the update, and my fiddling focused the backup so much it avoided these files. Anyway, by that time it was very late and I was very tired. So I hit restart and went to sleep without waiting to see what happened.
Well, I didn't lose my computer. And my thumb drive etc is working again. But here's the kicker. The update fixed my broken Cortana, my inconsistent start button, my inability to search, and the dead headset socket. That was a shock. All fixed. Well, except my speaker no longer worked. I could still get sound using external speakers, and I was eventually able to update the driver. So all fixed? Well, good enough to now. The speaker icon on the task bar does nothing when I click it. But so be it. It wouldn't be Windows 10 without at least one broken part.
