Default Ancient Bible Released

The London Times today hails the event of the release of Codex Sinnaiticus on line for examination, one of the oldest and most complete manuscripts of the New Testament. Well, this is a main text upon which modern translations are based. However, it is one of the most corrupt examples of manuscript transmission that exists. In the 19th century it was brought to prominence by two Cambridge scholars, Westcott and Hort, who alleged a 4th century revision of the New Testament text, which necessitated throwing out 90% of all manuscript evidence, making Codex Sinnaiticus a preeminent representation of the original. The evidence of the revision was assured to be forthcoming as scholars continued to examine existing manuscripts under the light of the new theory… but one thing no one promoting the W & H text ever reviews is… that we are still waiting for this evidence to appear… and in fact, newly discovered manuscripts additionally are causing the theory of the revision to be rejected. And the proponents of the W & H text never review, that scholars from the 19th century with far greater expertise rated Sinnaiticus (and its main companion Vaticannus) as utterly worthless due the horrible condition of copyist transmission.

The Times notes Sinnaiticus’ murky past, but only due to ownership issues. However, I don’t see how on-line examination will permit anyone to review the multitude of evidence on copyist errors, which requires close examination of the actual parchment.
