Serif have announced the availability of PagePlus 11, the latest version of their desktop publishing program. You can see the details at http://www.serif.com/PagePlus/PagePlus11/index.asp
The major new features are a major interface revamp, the ability to open and edit pdf files, beefed-up graphics support (including importing PSD files with clipping paths) and the inclusion of multilingual dictionaries - as well as UK and US English, there are dictionaries for Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Fench, German (new), German (pre-reform), Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Canadian English. There are several new bundled typefaces which include central and easter european and Turkish characters like the Polish L with slash or Czech Z with caron.
And it's less than 100 pounds including VAT in the UK. Existing users of other Serif products get up to £50 off that.

Y'know, it looks increasingly like Serif PP11 is an alternative upgrade path for Pagemaker users who cannot afford or do not want InDesign.

Windows PageMaker users. It runs on only one platform.

Yep, t'is true! I was aware of that, should've mentioned it. At least Windows Pagemaker DTP'ers have a pro / semi pro alternative that does not mean Quark or Publisher...

Of course, for a long time Windows users (and pre-Windows PC users as well) had Ventura Publisher. Guess it is gone now, however.

The 20-year-old PageStream is another cross-platform program that is capable of commercial quality typography, layout, and output. It began way back when on Amiga, but now offers versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as Amiga. It costs $100 for the standard, $150 for the professional version.

Has it been put out to pasture...???

Was on Corel's site recently. Could find no mention of Ventura.

It must have been withdrawn very recently then: Ventura 10 is still being sold (for $699) on the Web.

Guess not — see Michael’s message.

It has certainly lost stature. Used to be a big deal, with lots of really dedicated users. Especially for the GEM version, but even later. That is an example of a program that lost steam from too many acquisitions.

It still has a very loyal following. The problem is Corel and all its various incarnations, never bothered to advertise it and have sorely neglected it in recent years. You will still find a group of people, like me, who still use it and wouldn't switch.

In This months "Computer Shopper" here in GB, a review of DTP apps had the usual suspects, InDesign (which got top marks), QXpress, PagePlus, Publisher as well as CorelDraw. Even though CorelDraw is a top range graphics app, the review said that Corel was encouraging is users to switch to CrorelDraw for thier publishing and page layout needs.....interesting......
