Simple photo display web pages

It used to be so simple. Just throw a table onto your website, hide the dividers, and arrange your page that way. Then CSS came along and its boosters said that tables are not "the correct way." And then people who used tables were subjected to table-shaming and their user names had to be followed with a scarlet-red "T" in parentheses.

So now I've forgotten almost everything I knew about HTML (which was not much) and I want to make a page where beauty matters not. I just want a page were I can put a few photos that are the size of thumbnails until the visitor clicks. Meaning, no separate thumbnail images need to be made. And a download link for a zip file that contains all of them.

I think I have an old DOS program somewhere called Visual Studios that can that, but I'll have to check. That is unless someone here knows of a template out there that does not put style ahead of utility.

Anyway, I apologize for conveying this in a needlessly lengthy way. I tried to make it brief after seeing how long it is but gave up.

IrfanView (free, www.irfanview.com) can take a folder of images and create a thumbnail page where each of the thumbs is a clickable link to a page containing the full image.

It uses templates for both the thumbnails and image pages; you can edit these, copy them and specify your own modified templates and so on.

You invoke it from IrfanView's Thumbnail viewer (open Irfanview, press T).
The main IrfanView window's help menu will bring up a useful help file.
Open the Thumbnails branch of the help file and all will be revealed.

I used to use BreezeBrowser (www.breezesys.com, $95 new, $50-ish to upgrade to current) for this kind of thing. It also has editable templates for its html output.

It isn't strictly speaking a table even if it can be used as one from a purely visual point of view.

You can do many interesting and useful things with a grid. If you follow the link there are a few tutorials that shows you what it can be used for.

One thing you shouldn't be doing with it is displaying tabular data - which of course is the only thing you should be using a table for... Not for page layout, if you know what I mean!
