Sooo...on Weds, I stopped by the computer place that Marlene had used to have her system built to see if they would install a new CMOS battery for me (my system date/time wasn't sticking) and he didn't have one but told me the local supermarket carried them and so I bought one and was *very* brave and put it in myself.
While my system boots, there is something hinky going on with the power on sequence so I decided to swing by the place today to ask them about the BIOS setting and to see about getting a new video card. I left there with no video card but having ordered a new system to the tune of $1200! Since I no longer have an extra monitor, I felt compelled to spend the afternoon looking at LCD panels and I've just ordered a NEC 2090UXi to the tune of $800!!! OH MY GOD!!!! There is no way I should be doing this but I think my current system is on its last legs...the power up problem is not in the BIOS and the guy said, it's either the video card dying, the mobo dying or the power switch on my case... I suppose the logical sensible thing to have done would be to take my system in to them to have them check it out and fix it but I didn't do that... They hope to have the new system ready by Thursday and I'm hoping against hope that the new monitor will be here on Thursday also--if I'd not dithered around doing research alllll afternoon and gotten my order in by 4:40pm, they might have shipped the monitor today... I think I've gone off my rocker completely.... Terrie |

That's the only way to buy stuff in my view. It's eminently satisfying.
Congratulations on the new computer and the LCD screen. I can't bear to look at CRTs any more. I now have four computer LCDs and an LCD television. __________________ ![]() |

Basically I told them what I do, that I wanted 3 harddrive, 2gb RAM and that I'm partial to AMD systems and they spec'd it out and I said...ok... >>Congratulations on the new computer and the LCD screen. Thank you...'-}} >>I can't bear to look at CRTs any more. I now have four computer LCDs and an LCD television. I'm really looking forward to using and LCD...I do hope that I've made the right choice...I've always been pleased with my NEC CRT so I hope I will be equally pleased with the LCD... I just hope that my current system holds out until I get the new system, monitor and everything copied over. I've always shut my system down at the end of the day but with this power-on problem, I'm leaving it running--it could be the power supply failing, the mobo, the video card or the power switch on the pc case. I think it's the power switch but I will take the system in once I get everything copied and if it's not too expensive, I'll have it fixed and then donate it someplace... Terrie |

You don't say what OS it will have -- if it's VISTA you might want to go to 3GB? Later I see XP Home -- main difference between Pro and Home is something to do with logging onto Domains which is something to do with networks and big business setups? I think there are some tools not available in XP Home that are in XP Pro but from what I see in CIS Windows Forums you can get some of them from W2K as downloads -- but don't ask me what or why. I can point you to those who would know if you want. But since you trust these guys and they know what you need to do ... __________________ Hugh |

Right...that's what he said... >>I think there are some tools not available in XP Home that are in XP Pro but from what I see in CIS Windows Forums you can get some of them from W2K as downloads -- but don't ask me what or why. I'll take a hope over to the cserve forum in the next couple of days--I want the Windows forum (vs. pchardware) correct??? >>But since you trust these guys and they know what you need to do ... Exactly--I hope! Terrie |

For XP Home you need:
http://community.compuserve.com/n/pf...=ws-winsupportXP Pro is in the other NT forum. Likewise for VISTA for anyone interested. Jerry is a good one to look for on things like the tools and so on. __________________ Hugh |
