Default Editing pdfs

A publisher asked me if I could correct a mistake in a pdf file. 5 was asked to change the word 'evening' to 'afternoon'.

Making the change was no problem except that the text was justified and the line then extended too far into the right-hand margin. I couldn't see any way of changing the tracking or the size of the spaces between the words in order to reduce the line length.

In the end I had to import the page into InDesign and set a new line of text to overlay the old one, then export the page as a pdf and insert it into the original file.

Is there a way I could have done the whole thing in Acrobat.
