I know that this is not exactly publishing, but it's adjacent enough that I figured that someone might have a suggestion.
I need to edit a video file. It's the most basic task - I need to trim the first few minutes of the video file. Is there a decent free program that would be able to do this? Thanks! |

Both Lightworks and DaVinci Resolve are very capable, but on the free versions there are limits on the output formats. I've used both and these are industrial strength tools and perhaps not the most user-friendly video editing applications there is.
https://www.lwks.com/ https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/sa/...avinciresolve/ Hitfilm Express might be an easier to use option. Free and easy to use I'm told. Unlike the two above I've never used it. https://fxhome.com/product/hitfilm-express |

I would concur with Bo on Lightworks. If all you need is to put something on YouTube the free version of Lightworks is fine. If you need 1080p then you will need to pay - and it's expensive.
I have heard positive reports of ShotCut but I have never used it. Barrie Greed |

I've tried ShotCut on Linux and it's certainly able to top and tail a simple video, but otherwise very basic.

Hmm ... I just looked at the ShotCut site; it looks like it's grown like topsy, way beyond basic now. And still free. I've been using Camtasia but I think I'll give ShotCut a go next time I need to do any video editing. Thanks for the suggestion.

It's alive! This means I have to check it out too. It's been a while since I used it.

Are you on Linux? If you're on Windows, last I knew you could still find a couple of versions of Windows MovieMaker for download. It's fairly basic, but it works.
You might also look at EaseUS Video Editor. |
