Unhappy Tablet overdose?

Having just entered the field of graphic design and wanting to do it properly, I've just purchased a Wacom Intuos3 a5 tablet.

So far, I'm finding it it more difficult working with the pen than with a conventional mouse. I'm all over the place. Trying to extract an image by tracing round it is laughable (for onlookers). Is this a common experience for beginners? Will I eventually get fluent with using the tablet or am I just an ageing incompetent?
