Yes! I've had those sort of problems in TBird too...

I'm using an older version of TBird (3.1.15, if it still works, why change? '-}}) and I found that selecting "Other Languages" (Tools > Options > Display > Formatting > Advanced > "Fonts For:" section) seems to work better. Also in the "Character Encodings" section in "Advanced", I have "Incoming Mail:" set to "Western (ISO-8859-1)" and "when possible, use default character encoding in replies" UNchecked.
