Any new item added to the feed will (should, anyhow) carry a date/time stamp that the reader at your end can use to track new items vs stuff you've seen already. In some cases, it can behave quite like an email client (only you can't reply). Some email clients can also act as RSS readers. Opera's built-in email client, Outlook and a few others.

Many sites that offer RSS feeds let you click on an RSS icon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feed_icon
