So I've just started Tana French's "In the Woods" and one character is describing what another character is wearing "She was wearing combats..." which I initially took to be about shoes but then "...and clunky trainers" which I know are what we in the US would call "sneakers". At that point, I figured that "combats" are some sort of pants/trousers and this is borne out by a later reference to "smoke blue-blue combats".

What exactly at "combats" and how are they different from other pants/trousers?
