Default 'For free'

Nearly everyone nowadays attaches a gratuitous 'for' to 'free' in the sense of gratis, for nothing. Is was, once, a mild witticism to say 'for free', just as I and a few thousand other youths thought it clever to say, 'Free, gratis, and for nothing'. But I grew out of it: I wish others would, and choose free, gratis, or for nothing, and not 'for free'.
