Default *%#*& Hewlett-Packard

I have an H-P multi-function laser machine that I have had for about ten years (or so). It only prints in B&W but it scans in color. I don't use the scanner function often but, when I do, it has worked very well.

Until Saturday, when I needed to scan a document and I realized that when I switched to a newer computer as my "office" machine, I never installed the H-P software suite that handles scanning. No problem, I thought -- download the software from H-P and install it.

WRONG!

I downloaded the software directly from H-P, ran it, it took forever and then hung up at 99% finished -- and then it aborted. Tried again -- same result. Found an older version of the software, which is what I have on the other machine. Same problem. Tried disabling the Windows firewall, as suggested by H-P's support FAQ. Same problem. Tried running the installer as administrator, as suggested by H-P. Same problem.

I finally decided to try running it in Windows 7 compatibility mode. Voila! Success!

One might think that after however many years Windows 10 has been out H-P could have updated their installer to run under Windows 10, but I guess they'd rather force their customers to buy a new printer.
