This used to be doable with an add on in Firefox, but a good while back when they made a major change all of the add ons that did this stopped working. I've tried some work arounds that require some lines in the startup file. But that tends to break when FF gets updated. I've been using PaleMoon, (which I learned about here) which is a FF branch from before that change. It's worked well. But recently it's started to just randomly shut down. I have not real idea what triggers it, as these doesn't seem to be any pattern. I can go days without it happening, and then it can happen 5 times in an hour. So, I'm looking for a replacement. Any ideas?
So, I changed the settings, and the crashes seem to have stopped. But now I'm back to a problem I'd had in the past, which is that the browser can get *painfully* sloooooow.

Like being able to type a whole line before the second and third letters of the line show up, or waiting ridiculously long times for response to a mouse click. What makes his even more aggravating is that it's not always clear when it's just taking its time to respond vs the keystrokes / mouse click not even registering. And I know it's not my keyboard and mouse because Pale Moon is the only place I'm having this problem. To the point that on occasion I've opened the same site in FF or Chrome just to be able to finish what I'm working on.

Hmmm...I've not experienced that likely because I'm basically using one screen per active browser session vs. your multiple tabs--my gut says that each tab uses RAM/system resources so the more tabs, the greater the RAM/system resource usage. Also, what can be BIG drag is all the crosslinks sites/pages now have. It used to be that using say, uBlockOrigin or uMatrix (or Request Policy) you'd see a count of maybe anywhere from 20-30 crosslinks for site/page but now, there can be well over 100+ and if you aren't blocking the crosslinks (via uBO, uMatrix, Request Policy), then they take time to load and that time is not only based on YOUR internet speed but also the dictates of the sending site so the more tabs, the more crosslinks, the more time they take to load.

I notice this when I go to my sister's place to help her with her systems and go to site(s) at her place that I also go to from my place and it always takes longer for the site/pages to load on her systems at her place--we both have Verizon FiOS and the same internet speed--because she only uses an adblocker and not something like uBO/uMatrix/etc. which all have a learning curve.

I'm thinking that you likely close your multi-tabbed browser and when you open again, you start where you left off--as in all the tabs are in place--so that resource use continues to grow? You don't see it with FF or Chrome because (my bet is) there is only one/two tabs open in either of those browsers because you are just checking on something?

Have you looked at Task Manager to see what it's showing? In my Win7/Pro system, I'd look at the Performance tab--not sure which Win O/S version you are running so the Task Manager info may be different.

It might be worth experimenting when you get this response lag to see what happens if you start closing tabs--start with closing one tab, wait a tiny bit, close another and then another and see if that reduces the lag?

Alternatively, you could also create a new profile and then using the new profile, see if you can (re)create the situation with as many tabs open to see if you get the lag. I'm thinking there might be file(s) within a profile that just get too large. For example, the "places.sqlite" which essentially holds the history of where you've been--in my browser settings (FF and PM), I keep history and I presume that you do also. You could backup places.sqlite and then delete it in your current profile (it will be recreated when you open the browser) which (in theory) means all your history is gone but, it would be interesting to see if that fixes the lag--you can always copy the backed up places.sqlite back to your profile.

Keep us posted...

I wish. When I posted this today, I had just experienced the slowness with exactly one tab open.

Windows 10. I'll give a look at that.

I tried that when I first ran into this problem. It didn't help.

That's why I'm a bit stumped.

Could it be the site itself? URL--if not work/private? Or is it just any site?

Time of day? Day of the week?

With the browser closed, backup places.sqlite some place and then delete it from your profile, open your browser and go to the same site. Still laggy?

I was thinking of that, but I just went to a site I normally don't go to much (Slate.com) and, oh my! I haven't been on that site in weeks.

It might be worth logging it, but I don't think it's that.

It's worth trying.
