Default Logo critique: Dental lab (revamp)

Happy New Year, everyone. You may remember the dental logo I was tweaking a few months back. The owner decided he wants a total logo revamp, so attached are some variations for your review. I started a new post to avoid confusion.

As usual, the client wants something simple and memorable like the Nike logo, but doesn't know exactly what. I felt like I had virtually no choice but to use a tooth visual. I like the dual-meaning of the dental implant/flaming torch. I also tried some science themes (atoms, molecules, etc.) to representing technology in a broad and fun way. Feedback would be appreciated.

They want to stick with royal blue with black and white/grey, but I went with a brighter cyan and a secondary light tint to freshen it up. I considered adding tangerine to compliment them, but it was tough adding orange to teeth.

Happy new year to you, too...'-}}

I like all of these although I'm not sure about the black background. I think I prefer row 1 particularly the white background version.

Left side, rows 2 and 3 for some reason read "drunk" and/or "pain" to me--the little bubbles and the halos (?). I wonder how they would look without the bubbles but keep the halos?

Left side, row 4, take out the inner lines/circles but leave everything else...

Right side, rows 2-4 look like ice cream cones--my guess is they are implants? Of those, I think right side, row 4 is the best of them--more tooth and less ice cream cone...'-}}

>>but it was tough adding orange to teeth.

Yeah...I wouldn't go there... at. all. '-}}

Thanks, Terrie. It's frustrating not having much direction or comments from the owner on brand image to work from. Some people say tooth visuals are too straight forward or too whimsical, the font isn't modern enough, or note the ice cream resemblance. But I want the audience to quickly understand what the company does, and I assume the clinics that buy this equipment recognize a dental implant.

Maybe I need to ask for more comments from my client to make sure I'm at least in the ball park of the image they want to convey. I was considering making some kind of shield/tooth icon, a symbol of precision and quality, or perhaps even a simplified one-color logo of their brand-new facility.

Happy New Year! I think I'm with Terrie - top right. But more comments from the client would be helpful for you. It's very difficult when the client doesn't really know what they want. When that's the case they should at least give you some feedback on what you do manage to come up with. Good luck, Ronald!

Hi Ronald, although teeth is one of the first things that springs to mind when thinking of dentists I'm not convinced you have to actually depict them.

As Terrie already mentioned the ice cream cones, I saw those as well. And the other illustrations looked a bit like sweets (in my mind anyway).

Look at the bigger picture - what if anything is different about visiting this particular dentist compared to others. How do they present themselves (friendly, caring, modern, clean, or any number of other words that could describe the experience)? Don't focus on the clinical side of things.

And have a great and productive new year!

Hi Ronald, and happy new year to you, too.

I can understand the reason for the implant/torch, but on first glance, I thought "Ice cream cone?"

My preference would be for the simplest version, the one at upper left. Which I like a LOT. Of course, I'm not a dental lab, nor do I play one on the internet.

Given that the client doesn't know what he wants, and thinking about something that doesn't suggest pain, I was wondering about using a stylised smile, as simple as possible, to give a positive look to the logo.

Oh Ann, now you've done it ...

And you can see me tonight
With a stylized bright smile
It don't hurt very much
Didn't take a long while
Won't you please tell the man
I didn't drill anyone
....

somebody stop me!
