Default FreeHand and EPS file

Freehand MX on OSX: when I import an Illustrator CMYK EPS file into FH onto a background image, the EPS ends up with a white box. Any ideas how to fix it, chaps? (I got round it today by exporting the EPS as a black-and-white tiff, which imported into FH without the box, but I might not be so lucky next time!)
