I am using OL2010. My CompuServe email comes in POP3; my Gmail IMAP. My Gmail used to be POP3, but that stopped working a while ago. I have clients who expect to see the same email on several devices: computers, tablets, phones; so IMAP works well for them. But a couple get so much mail that their inboxes can have 100k messages in a less than a year! IMHO that is not really manageable with IMAP.

I have not seen a corrupted PST in a long time. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but that's what backups are for.
