Default Even computers get the blues

I read a theoretical article in Science Magazine about AI getting depressed, or even hallucinating. AI depression was characterized as an AI system encountering a problem for which the AI system has inadequate problem solving knowledge. The result would be the AI getting stuck in a logic rut that diminishes its overall ability to perform. Or, at least, that is close to what the article said.

I've actually seen this happen while playing backgammon against AI that was was a better player than I am, but we got into a situation that the AI clearly didn't understand. And instead of spreading out its checkers so it could attack me regardless of the dice it rolled, it started stacking all its checkers onto one spot. And then leaving them there. Even low level human player would have done better than that.

I posted on a backgammon forum about this, and others had seen similar things from the same AI software. And all of them were endgame situations (as was mine) that don't happen often. And so the AI had little experience or training with this.

Now, I imagine that if the AI had its learning ability enabled in the software, it might have seen its way out of the rut. But it only drew on its existing training and experience.
