I think that's a very reasonable approach--it's what my own mechanic shop does. The only way to really know if it would work as a shirt patch would be to create the patch logo at its actual size and then take the file to a local shop that could create the actual patch and ask their opinion on how it would look. If the cost weren't too high--say...less than $10 or so--for a single patch, have them make it, see what you think and take it to the shop owner. If nothing else, it would give you a souvenir of the job...'-}}
