I am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to import a table from word to pagemaker and it is not behaving. It is three columns wide and many long, and there are merged vertical columns throughout.
I am preparing a paper for publication so it needs to look good. |

Hi, I started a new job as desktop publisher this week and its great!
![]() Most of my work is going to be with pagemaker 7, so my plans to brush up on InDesign will have to wait. Can anyone recommend any online courses? I will be working on research papers and an annual report. I'm working on lots of papers sent in from researchers in China at the moment, and importing them from word to pagemaker is not always as smooth as I'd wish. ![]() |

I am rusty on this — although I used PageMaker from version 1 through 7, I usually had only small tables and I formatted them in PageMaker (as tabbed text). Are you using Adobe Table? If so, it should be picking up Word styles (although it might mangle them, you should be able to redefine them on your system). I say should, as I did not use it. But I have read that it does work. Google on “PageMaker 7 Adobe Table” and you should find many courses, videos, and other learning tools, at a wide range of prices. (I am going to move this thread to Print Design so more people will see it.) __________________ :: [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] |

My problems may be that the documents originated in China and all the tables from this one person are importing in a distorted manner. I've done another paper today and it imported fine.

Have you tried opening their files in some recent version of Word to see if they are valid to begin with? I would have to wonder if the Chinese partner is using OpenOffice or a similar "compatible" program, which isn't alwys compatible when heavy formatting is involved. Or simply a different version of Word, or some creative manual formatting. There are many ways that a "simple" word processing program can have "wrong" formatting in it, making conversions into a very individual business.
The less formatting they do over there--the easier your job will be over here. |

Yes, I've learnt quickly how to do all of this. Most often when I open a figure or table in word I end up having to take out the text and reapply it in pagemaker.
Now my problem is trying to make an imported graphic containing text look high resolution enough for print - I'm sure its been copied from a pdf and inserted, and there's no way to get it separately as an image. Oh the joys...! But I love this job, so I shouldn't complain too much. |

If Pagemaker (which I've never used) is anything like InDesign, graphics are displayed onscreen as a 72 ppi "placeholder" to improve perfomance and keep file size down. The placeholder links to the original, high-resolution graphic, which will be used when you go to print; so it's OK if the images (including the image-based text) look crummy and pixellated onscreen.

Problem is, they look crummy when printed as well. Goes to show that writers should send images with their papers!

Can you request the original images? I used to have to do that with clients, for most of whom the whole notion of resolution is a black hole.
