Default Ship or boat

Is the ocean-going vessel that sank off South America a ship or a boat? Both words were used in news reports.

This boat definition includes a ship. Some purists say that if you can load it on a ship, it is a boat. They make an exception for the long-standing naval convention of calling all submarines, however large, "boats" and not ships.

To me, "boat" should be restricted to smaller vessels, and any large ocean-going vessels should always be called ships.
