Default Copying object along the path - Caterpillar tracks effect

Is to possible at all to copy/distribute an object along the path in Illustrator 10 or CS? Doing this along a perfect circle is quite easy, but this time I have the rectangle shape with rounded corners. I need this to create a caterpillar tracks for some illustration. Some people advise that Blend tool and art brush can help in this case. Art brush (made out from small squares) can be partially helpful, although the final effect is far from perfect. Couldn't figure it out when it comes to Blend tool.
Cheers

You can do some cool things with simple dashed lines, overlapping each other. I have done highways (including 4 lane) and railway tracks by making a path, stroking it with dashes (ties) adding a duplicate path on top, stroking it solid with a narrower black, duplicating a narrower white path on top. You get ties from the bottom layer, and the white on black make the parallel rails. Stroking the white can allow the ties to cross under the rails too.

Hi donmcc,

Thanks for the reply. I found that Pattern brush can do a great job here...exactly what I needed. Cheers
