Default Macromedia announces new products

Macromedia just announced Dreamweaver 8, Flash Pro 8, and Fireworks 8. These will also be contained in the upgraded Studio 8.

And did you notice they're no longer including Freehand? Guess we know one app that will cease to be when Adobe takes over (not that I think anyone here figured otherwise).

No, I didn't notice that at first. The page I came in on seemed to show FreeHand MX as part of the new suite. So I assumed it was included, but not updated. Then I read Kathleen's message and looked more deeply. FreeHand is not listed as being in the suite. Either is ColdFusion. And I've not yet found a mention of Homesite.

I couldn't find any mention of Homesite, either. Why haven't I heard an uproar yet?

Roar.

I hope they don't lose Homesite on the merger. It is a beautiful little editor, and I use it all the time.

ColdFusion is naturally not shown because it has largely been rolled into Dreamweaver MX and probably won't be a separate product in the future.

I couldn't do my job without Homesite, despite the fact I tend to use Dreamweaver a bit more. The combination is why they are my preferred tools.

I'm not surprised to see less of CF. My boss attends conferences around the country and he told me that none of the professionals use CF anymore; it seems to be dying with PHP and one other (name escapes me) taking over.

Probably ASP (Active Server Pages, the MS solution) or possibly JSP (Java Server Pages).

I started with CF, went to ASP and had nicely learned it when I found that few service providers would offer it on their default boxes (sometimes available on premium services) so I tackled php.

I know it wasn't ASP, as that's something we have banned at work for security reasons. On my personal sites, it's available at a premium because the host doesn't like having to deal with it. ;>

FYI, did some more digging. HomeSite is still bundled with DW8. http://www.macromedia.com/software/homesite/

HomeSite is only bundled with Windows Dreamweaver (not the Mac version).

It sounds a bit like BBEdit (but more tailored precisely to web development; BBEdit is good for all sorts of plain text jobs).

And that is a pity. Maybe Adobe will port it to the Mac when they take over. It really is a smooth little program. (And I'm a couple versions back, there might be new goodies in the current version).
