Have you ever needed to remove and replace the first three letters of a file name across hundred of files. Or remove a specific character series from the middle of hundreds of file names in folders and subfolders.

I've done this and more using Rename Master. Except when I first fired it up I didn't realize what it could do. Its interface did not inspire confidence. I didn't notice the recursive feature. The tree navigation pane was not visible. And it was not until I came back to it weeks later that I realized what a powerhouse this is. But I had to be willing to sit down and learn the program by mousing over everything and popping into every choice. Once I did that I was able to do renaming scenarios I previously thought were impossible.

It also allows you to preview what the renames will look like to all the files you are renaming, and even undo them after the fact. These two features are invaluable if you are doing complex changes on a batch of hundreds of dissimilar filenames.

Anyway, here it is: http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/108/

Interesting to see that XnSoft is multi-platform now. They still have their Windows-only XnView, but now they also have XnViewMP for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I downloaded XnViewMP Windows. It is a photo file manager. The Windows version can run without installing. Or you can use the Windows registry if you want. And because I don't have to install their software to use it, I don't worry about clogging my registry.

I also tried their retro photo effects tool. Fun tool. If you need free retro effects, this one is works better than I expected. Not just retro color, but also light leaks, vignetting. etc. It's worth a look. It's not a plugin; it's standalone. They also have a faux sketch tool. Not one I'd use, but it's free.

If you want to try any of this, avoid the big download button that you see. Instead, continue to scroll down until you see download links for each platform.

I'm looking for a good portrait lens and the Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 II looks great for the price and is Amazon's #1 best-selling lens; however, it's made of pretty cheap parts and can be purchased for as low as $85. I'd be willing to spend nearly $200 on a lens, but the only logical upgrades from the 1.8 would be 1.4 which is nearly $300.

So basically, if anyone knows of a portrait lens that's above the Canon 50mm F/1.8 in quality but not much more than $200, I'd appreciate it.

...I was told by my supervisor that Adobe has made CS3 free to download because they "no longer support it." But I looked at their website and see no evidence of this. A Google search shows no support for this either--just some sites with it for download and YouTube videos explaining how to download it via different sites, and comments claiming that these downloads they have viruses.

Has anyone heard of this? I'd jump on it, but I want to download CS3 from a safe source.

Hello,

I'm looking into software packages for publishing that will allow me to create around 80 individual manuals but where each manual can link (hyperlink) to each other.

For example I have a Setup Manual, a Troubleshooting Manual and Service Manual.

When a technician is setting something up and happen to run into a problem, they need to troubleshoot. The Setup manual therefore has links to the Troubleshooting manual. They can be generic "see Troubleshooting Manual ####" or detailed "see section 11.2 of Troubleshooting Manual ####".

While troubleshooting they may need to replace a defect part with a new one and therefore there are links to the Service manual. After replacing with a new component, it needs to be setup so there is a link to the Setup manual.

The above is a slight simplification as we have around 80 manuals where the around 60 of them are detailed setup manuals for specific components.

I'm looking for a publisher that can help define and maintain the 1,000 of links within all the documents and publish in a format that a technician can read easily and not have to open multiple files manually. They can simply click the hyperlink and it opens the other manual and brings the user directly to that section. Much like a webpage works.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you,

If users accidentally click the compatibility mode button, our template breaks. See http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/ for an example. We initially had our CSS working for tableless layout in all browsers, even older IE, but a contractor we had for about a year may have made a change and she's gone now. It's driving us nuts. From what I've read, using IF statements doesn't effect compatibility mode.

We think the problem is related to our #wrapper (the area between the header and footer) and #subnavigation.

Has anyone run into anything like this before?

thanks,
