Hi all,

Bear with me if I'm being stoopid, but how are you all getting the cute avatar photos to show up next to your messages? I tried to upload a photo that I had res'd down to 72dpi and sized down to 80x80 pixels, but it seems it's too big. And (using Adobe PhotoDelux) I can't seem to get it any smaller in terms of file size (the smallest I can get is 50kb.)

Please point me towards any turorials you have for Avatars for Dummies!

Thanks,

Laura <who does most of her networking through Yahoo email lists these days>

sized down to 80x80 pixels...the smallest I can get is 50kb.50kb seems awful large for an 80x80 file. Let's check some stuff:

1. is it really 80x80 *pixels*?
2. what color mode?-- rgb or indexed color, not cmyk
3. any alpha channels or layers?--lose 'em
4. what format you saving?--jpg or gif

an 80x80 gif should be somewhat more than 6.4k; an 80x80 rgb jpg should be less than 19.2k.

Hi Laura.

It has been too long since I've seen/used PhotoDeluxe. Does it have a "save for web" option? That would leave off all the things Don mentioned and should get it down to the correct size.

It automates the process considerably, and you can view the result before you commit.

But I do not remember if PhotoDeluxe has ImageReady in it as other Adobe apps do.

If all else fails, I’ll take your TIFF or whatever and fix it for you. Let me know.

Ok, I got it now. It seems that PhotoNotVeryDeluxe does indeed put an alpha channel in a JPEG file, even if you save it for the web. I tried a GIF file and it worked fine.

Thanks for the help folks.

This is basically a test to see if my fiddling in Corel Photo Paint has done the trick with my avatar. It has appeared on the Control Panel entry in this Forum but when I saved changes I had an error message .........

It worked after all :)

Thanks. Cannot understand why it threw up an error message. No matter it worked and that is the main thing.

Thanks. Cannot understand why it threw up an error message. No matter it worked and that is the main thing.I had a similar problem yesterday. Tried to attach a small .gif file and got an error message (said format not supported, which isn’t true).

So then I decided to embed it in the message, and it worked fine.

We make lists oddities, and try to track them down, so thanks for mentioning it.

I should have noted down the error message. It said something like an error has occurred ......... and that was it but I could see the image in my Control Panel. These gremlins are sent to try us :)
